Annotation:
A boy and a topiary garden tell the story of a great grandfather's life.
Reactions/Observations:
A great grandson tends to a topiary garden while telling the readers the stories that make up his great grandfather's life. Each topiary depicts a separate event. The illustrations are light and playful, giving a striking contradiction to the serious nature of some of the events being shared. The boy shares when his grandfather goes to world war and also when he meets his grandmother. Like life, the reader goes back and forth between how they feel about different situations.
The illustrations were truly memorable. Before it had been recognized as a Caldecott honor, I remember admiring the art. The topics may go over the heads of the younger end of our target audience (baby and toddler), but preschoolers may be able to understand the simple sentiment behind the maze of topiary: the admiration of a grandson for his grandpa.
